We made it as far north as the Roman Empire did in England. The
Romans built Hadrian's Wall built in the 2nd century to defend their empire against the
barbarian tribes.

Despite a few showers, the weather in England has been delightful!

Sarah, wish you were here. But I'm glad you gave me this great umbrella!
love the updates! and your adventures. :-) -- and you two are too cute with your umbrella! :-P
ReplyDeleteFirst - THANK YOU for all the pics and updates. It is great being able to 'live with you' thru words and pics.
ReplyDeleteSecond - Loving the comments! DO you two argue over who is going to write the comments to the blog? both doing a great job. BTW - very original Jesse.
finally - according to a 'British' series mom and I watched last week, Hadrian's Wall was more a border fence - to mark territory. A three foot high stone fence is not going to do much to defend against barbarian invaders. But i sound like Jesse now - oh, I saw it on a video. You two are actually THERE!!!
So Jesse, is it great to see and know somwthing apart from what you saw on discovery channel???
Ok, it is a pretty short wall, but they brilliantly laid out the wall on cliffs and other natural defenses so to make it quite a defense. Add to this lookout towers and forts like the one we visited and you have quite a barrier set up.
ReplyDeletemaybe it's the picture of you on the 8 inch high section with the orange umbrella that makes me wonder about its ability to hold back barbarian hordes. just not quite like the defenses i saw in 'The Two Towers'
