Castle Howard

Howard castle has always been a private residence rather than a defensive fortress. This was the only house in England to boast its own cupola. However, in 1940 the dome caught fire and fell three stories to the ground floor. The rapid destruction of the cupola effectively extinguished the blaze and saved the rest of the house with its abundant priceless artifacts.

The castle grounds have their own forest, a rare occurrence here in England. We loved hiking through a collection of trees and shrubs from all over the world. Our walk ended with fresh bread, cheese and fruit from local farms.

This statue of Julius Caeser is an original that dates back to the 1st century.
This statue of Hercules is just for the ladies.
